Yes, right away. Whiplash, concussions, and soft-tissue injuries often surface days later — and the medical record is the backbone of your claim.

Feeling fine is not evidence that you are fine

After a collision your body is flooded with adrenaline and cortisol. They suppress pain, sometimes for a day or more. People routinely walk away from a serious wreck, decline the ambulance, and wake up two mornings later unable to turn their head.

That delay is normal physiology. It is also, unfortunately, the exact pattern insurers use to argue you were not really injured.

What tends to show up late

Whiplash and soft-tissue injury. Neck and back pain frequently peaks 24 to 72 hours after the impact, not at the scene.

Concussion and mild traumatic brain injury. You do not have to hit your head or lose consciousness. Headaches, light sensitivity, irritability, trouble focusing or sleeping, and feeling "off" are all worth reporting. These are commonly missed precisely because the person minimizes them.

Disc injuries. A herniation can start as stiffness and take weeks to declare itself as radiating pain, numbness or weakness down an arm or leg.

Internal injury. Rarer, and the reason "wait and see" is a bad plan. Abdominal pain, dizziness, shortness of breath or worsening bruising need evaluation now, not Monday.

Why the medical record matters so much

Your claim is proved largely through medical documentation. A visit on the day of the crash creates a contemporaneous record connecting the collision to your symptoms. A first visit three weeks later invites an argument that something else caused the injury in the meantime.

Insurers score this. A treatment gap of even a couple of weeks is used to discount a claim, and long gaps mid-treatment are used the same way. Consistency is worth real money.

How to be a good historian

Tell the provider you were in a motor vehicle collision and give the date. Then describe every symptom, including ones that feel trivial or embarrassing — the ringing ear, the trouble sleeping, the wrist that only hurts at certain angles. Anything you do not mention is absent from the record, and later complaints about it look invented.

Follow the plan you are given. Go to the referrals. If something is not working, say so and get it documented rather than quietly stopping.

"I can't afford a doctor"

This stops many people, and it should not. PIP coverage on your own auto policy pays medical bills regardless of fault and pays quickly. Health insurance can be used. Many providers will treat on a letter of protection, meaning they wait to be paid out of the settlement. Call before you assume you have no options.
